The Great Maya Reef forms a natural barrier that turns Puerto Morelos into a true lagoon. The sea is calmer there, making swimming comfortable and reassuring for families and travelers less at ease in open water. This protection also affects underwater visibility, excellent for snorkeling: corals, sponges and tropical fish reveal themselves just a few meters from the surface.
Excursions offered by local clubs include outings suitable for beginners, diving introductions and more technical trips for certified divers. A must-see is exploring shipwrecks, such as the Juan Escutia boat, which has become an artificial reef and a refuge for many species. These visits are supervised by guides aware of ecosystem protection, respecting the rules of the Marine National Park.
The main beaches are easily accessible and offer fine sand, transparent waters and shaded areas. For a wilder experience, isolated beaches like Playa Secreto can be reached by kayak or boat, offering a feeling of total escape. The dry season from October to March is ideal for water activities: moderate winds for kitesurfing and windsurfing, calm seas for diving and snorkeling.
